About Us

Why we're here

An accurate measurement of success is an elusive thing for even the best of organizations. This is especially the case for non-profits, where traditional dollar metrics bear little to no meaning. This presents non-profits with an interesting challenge: without a benchmark of success, it is hard to achieve improvements and even harder to know what the right improvements are. And yet, donors and volunteers are increasingly evaluating the success and efficiency of the non-profits that they contribute to, to ensure that the time and money donated generates the maximum benefit possible.

It is with this challenge in mind that EyeOnDevelopment was founded; the international development community has a need for information on itself. Bringing the information together - be it people or books or simply pieces of electronic data - means providing the power for the community to improve. Feedback from volunteers on how well volunteer programs are run will allow organizations to make positive changes. This same information viewed by potential volunteers will allow more volunteers to choose the right programs to participate in to make the greatest impact.

We believe in the credo that “you are what you measure”, and welcome your thoughts on what you think the right measurements should be. Enjoy Eye On Development.

Our Mission

To increase the success of volunteer programs abroad by providing organizations and volunteers with pertinent information and metrics.

Our people

Sylvia Ng, Executive Director
Sylvia is a business intelligence IT consultant with a passion for volunteerism. Volunteer opportunities have taken her from design work for Engineers Without Borders to teaching English in Thailand and performing turtle conservation in Costa Rica. After meeting many people interested in volunteering abroad but not knowing where to look for programs, she decided to use her IT experience to found Eye On Development. She hopes that this site will encourage others to give back to the global community.

Sam Wong, Director of Technology
Sam has worked in a software development capacity at a multitude of high tech firms such Research In Motion, Telus Mobility, and T4G Inc. As Microsoft Certified Professional, Sam is dedicating his time to make this site the best it can be. He's a serious golf fanatic and can be found coding on his laptop at various Toronto bars and cafes.

Sara Lam, Director of Finance
Sara is tax analyst at a leading foreign exchange company. She enjoys participating in many different activities. From dancing salsa to giving speeches at Toastmasters, volunteering at St John Ambulance to playing softball with CCSA, she savours the oppourtunities to interact with others. She decided to join EOD because she feels appreciative of the people who want to help others less fortunate than themselves while interacting with a world completely different from their own. She believes this website will be of a great help to those trying to decide which program to go abroad with and hopes she can join the thousands who have taken this oppourtunity to go outside their boundaries and give back.
